An oil varnish applied by fingertips in a rich red-brown. This is my finest instrument made to date. It projects well and has a very clear and focused tone. Even across the strings. This is ready for an advancing to professional level player that doesn't want to spend $20,000 and up for an Italian of equal quality.
It is fitted with Eva Parazzi Gold strings and fine tune pegs (no necessity of fine tuners)
This violin was placed in a Dallas violin shop about 2017 and returned to me with the fingerboard off. I was not happy with the 2016 varnish, so it was stripped and revarnished. This is the darkest varnish tone I've ever done, and I've found it rather pleasant to look at. It looks much older, although without the chips and scratches normally associated with an antiqued instrument.
Please note the chinrest and tailpiece are custom made. Chinrest with clamps weighs 37 grams and tailpiece 9grams. Typical over the tailpiece chinrest weighs at least 60grams, and tailpiece about 13 grams.
Completed summer of 2019.
Based on Stradivari's "The Messiah" it is a standard length, but the middle and lower bouts are proportionately larger by about 4 and 8mm respectively.
The neck at the nut is expanded slightly to allow comfortable play of the violin, with near standard spacing. Great response, even tone across the strings.
The finish is a carmel colored brown oil varnish of great clarity and highest quality, with some shading to give it just enough character to intimate that it does indeed have a soul.
Currently fitted with a composite 5 string tailpiece with fine adjusters, and boxwood pegs.
Sonorous, slightly deeper in timber, more like a small viola, than a standard Stradivari because of oversized lower bout. Excellence response and projection with evenness across all strings, even the lower C string. Bridge is marked for 4 string play, and in that setup, it is a remarkably strong and bold tone.
