May 19-20, 2012 The SVA held its first meeting, with a small but enthusiastic crowd at Huthmakers Violins in Duluth, Georgia.  A great facility, wonderful hosts, lots of parking, a wonderful area.

What a great start for the organization, so much enthusiasm and participation, those that didn’t make it really missed the boat!!

We passed the by-laws.

We selected a board of directors and they include:

David Chandler – Burnsville, NC  (*President)

Jim Clinton – Taylors, SC  (Vice President)

Dixie Huthmaker – Duluth, GA

Anna Huthmaker – Duluth, GA

Dustin Williams – Nashville, TN (Treasurer)

Derek Schmidt – Duluth, GA (Secretary)

Jonathan Simon – Duluth, GA

*officers were selected at a meeting of the board during a break at the conference

The business meeting continued through a working lunch (we ordered in Pizza).  Now, doesn’t it look like we’re having fun?

The business meeting was then followed by a presentation by Kelvin Scott, a multiple VSA gold-medalist violin maker, on how to prepare your violin for competition.  This presentation will be made available to regular members in hard copy later this year.

Roland Huthmaker demonstrated how different bows can create large differences in the sound a violin makes.  For those of us that brought instruments with us, he played them with a variety of bows and it was amazing how the sound changed with each bow.  Thanks Roland!

FUTURE MEETINGS

Last week of October 2012 meeting at Howard Core’s facility in Anniston, Alabama.  Bring your shopping list!  We’re still working on the actual date.

Late April, 2013 General Member Meeting and our first Makers Competition.  We’re working on a location in Nashville for this event.  We’re also going to work in some fun things to participate in, and some audience participation in selecting winners in some categories other than technical merit and sound.
